Archaeological trip!

Last sunday S. and I decided to spend some time in Catania to visit the monuments I studied for my exam.
I am well prepared on history of art from middle age to our days, so we decided to start from an archeological tour.

We visited the Greek- Roman theatre.

It stands up at the center of the city, among baroque churches and palaces.
As you can see in this photo, the theatre had been covered by houses after the end of the Roman empire.
The archaeologists had to remove some of these buildings to let the theatre emerge.
Like in the ancient times, the theatre can be flooded for particular shows, thanks to subterranean waters.
This vision of ancient ruins and water really fascinated me :)

We visited also its inner tunnels, moving from sun light to a dark atmosphere.

A lovely sunday afternoon :)
